“I’ve never felt so guilty in my life,” says Anmol. He’s been with his girlfriend for two years but lately he’s found himself fantasising about her best friend.
“I don’t want to mess up my relationship over something like this but I really don't know how to get her friend out of my mind,” says Anmol. “I’m turned on every time I’m around her.”
Sexy Indian housewife Savita Bhabhi attracts more than 200,000 visitors to her porn site every day. Even though she’s only a cartoon character.
And that's in spite of a ban and attacks by angry politicians. Nearly nine out of ten visitors to kirtu.com are from India – it’s now one of the country’s 100 most popular websites.

“We put in a lot of effort creating our plots and art. That comes out in the final product and I guess that's what attracts visitors,” says one of the three makers via e-mail.
The three, including the creator of Savita Bhabhi who goes by the name Deshmukh, work from an unknown location outside of India. They cooperate with many volunteers on the storylines and artwork, as well as translations in English and ten different Indian languages, including Hindi. There's even a comedy film spin-off now in the making.
Kirtu, according to the website, refers to “comics or animation of Indian origin primarily featuring Indian sexuality”.
“It’s more subtle and the drawing style is more lifelike compared to anime or manga,” the maker explains. “Also, the situations and plots depicted are inherently Indian.”
Savita Bhabhi is an Indian housewife, complete with sari and a red mark on her forehead – traditionally worn by married woman. Having secretly had a wild sex life as a student, she is now bored with her husband who always seems to be at work.
She keeps herself entertained by seducing most men who cross her path: door-to-door salesmen, neighbourhood boys, a distant cousin and even a famous Bollywood actor who shows remarkable similarities to Amitabh Bachchan.
Not everyone likes her. In 2009 the government banned the website in India, citing complaints and the website’s ‘obscenity’ as the major reasons. After this the makers changed the address and made most content available to members only.
“We want to do our best to make sure the tons of Indian fans who visit every month will not be victim of internet censorship.”
The illegal status of pornography in India is not helping anyone, the makers argue.
“In almost every developed country around the world, pornography is legal. Porn is only as harmful or addictive as say a computer game. Ultimately, it depends on the individual. Making porn legal will weed out the 'seediness' associated with it.”
“Perverts and criminals”
More controversy arose when Savita Bhabhi went for a beach holiday in Goa in September of last year. The state’s tourism department, in particular, which is fighting Goa’s reputation as India’s sex capital because of scantily-clad foreign tourists, was not pleased.
"These sites are illegal and are the handiwork of unscrupulous perverts and criminals who are out to make a quick buck,” Nikhil Desai, managing director of the Goa Tourism Development Corporation told the media at the time.
Deshmukh and his colleagues are not impressed. “My guess is in India anything about sex is taboo,” they write.
“We were moving to a more liberated society, but for some reason that seems to be on hold now! Our way of dealing with this is to keep putting out new comics which we hope will broaden the scope of the Indian public's attitude towards sex."
