my story

Coming out to my parents: from horror to pride

When Nakshatra goes out for a coffee with his mother, they’re both on the look-out for cute men. “Do you fancy that guy?” she’ll say.

Things haven’t always been this way. Growing up in a village, he became aware of his feelings aged 16. A year later, after a move to Mumbai, he told his parents he was gay. His mum said she wished he was dead.

Sex A-Z

Shock of a violent boyfriend

Shock of a violent boyfriendWe were having a huge argument over something petty. I was used to this – things always spiraled out of proportion with him.

I remember it being very late on a sultry summer night. It had been a long day and my ex-boyfriend and I had just returned to his place after attending a friends’ wedding. It was a night that would leave me reeling in shock.

My friend trapped with a violent man

My friend trapped with a violent manTrying to support a friend through an abusive relationship is an unending and totally frustrating job, in my experience.

I’m sorry for being so bitter. But I’ve tried to help my best friend through a horrible, violent relationship for three long years – only to see her go ahead and marry the guy. Now she longs to get away, but it’s too late.

In exile from her husband

Gayatri: a friend of mine said...Last week I met a lady who had run away from 20 years of beatings by a drunken husband. She inspired me with her resilience.

Indian train journeys are entertaining by rule – primarily because there’s always company. And most often it’s talkative, engaging company! Like last week travelling to central India, when I made friends with a co-passenger who worked as domestic help in suburban Bombay.

Emotional abuse

Kuber: Guy Next Door Reclaiming Our ChoicesOK, confession time. I have been avoiding writing about emotional abuse within relationships.

My assumption was that it’s pointless to talk to those dastardly abusers. Then it hit me that I can talk to the real perpetrators. So today I’m going to blame the victims. In a special blog edition for the YPF's Reclaiming Our Choices event coming up on Sunday.

Swinging with the moods

Gayatri: a friend of mine said...We’ve all been through mood swings. Been fussy one time or another about something or other just because of our moods. But what happens when you have a new partner who is obsessively moody?

“I love her, but she’s just so moody. I’ve re-organised my life around her moods. I stay guarded and anxious. What’s worse, I’ve become moody as a reaction to her!” a friend said.

Why do we fall for assholes?

Gayatri: a friend of mine said...Have you heard this story? Girl meets boy and they fall in love. A few weeks later, boy turns out to be an asshole or the girl turns out to be a complete bitch.

It’s a common occurrence and I heard a similar sob story from a friend recently. “How could I’ve been so wrong? How could I not see that he was a dick,” my friend wailed.
